Villers-sur-Mer started to develop in 1870 and first on the cliffs.
Many very beautiful villas of different styles with very diverse ornaments can be observed.
Do you know that the emblem of this seaside resort is a dinosaur ?
Because Villers-sur-Mer is at the foot of the paleontological and geological site dating from the Jurassic period : the Vaches Noires Cliffs (Black Cow Cliffs).
Villers is also the first French town to be crossed by the Greenwich meridian :
The latter is materialized on the dike along the sea by a line on the ground that lights up at night.
And between Villers-sur-Mer and Blonville, walk through the marshes to observe nature and discover a sensitive natural area.
Free parking spaces are available in the residential areas, not far from the beach.
VISIT
- THE BEACH AND THE BLACK COW CLIFFS
Admire from the beach the beautiful villas of the 19th century and the white beach cabins which are installed from June to mid-September and that can be rented for the day ! (information at the « Etablissement des Bains-de-Mer »).
The seawall is 800 meters long. At its end, walk along the 100-meter high Black Cow Cliffs which extend over 4,5 km between Villers and Houlgate (see details in « Houlgate tab » HERE). Climbing is forbidden but you can walk on the sand at the foot of the cliffs. - THE CASINO
Built in 1988, it has a panoramic view and an ocean liner style. Did you know that there were 9 casinos in Villers before ?! - THE VILLAS
Dating from the Second Empire and the Belle Epoque, you will see them everywhere in Villers : in the city center and close to the beach, with red bricks and slate roofs, but also on the heights of the town. Some of them have beautiful gardens or parks that are grandiose ! - THE PALEOSPACE MUSEUM (to visit especially with kids)
5 avenue Jean Moulin, 14640 Villers-sur-Mer
Website HERE.
Return to the time of the Jurassic ( 160 million years ago) when Normandy was covered by a tropical sea … You will learn about the fossils found in the cliffs and discover the cosmos in the 360° planetarium. - THE MONTCEL STREAM PATH AND ITS WATERFALL
A trail of 2 kms along the Montcel stream between the city center of Villers (access via avenue de la Brigade Piron where the bridge is) and the marshes. You will cross the stream by two small wooden bridges, see a small waterfall and maybe some trouts. A very pleasant walk. - THE MARSHES OF VILLERS-BLONVILLE FOR A WALK
To the east of Villers-sur-Mer
110 hectares of wet meadows, canals and ditches.
You can discover the fauna and flora of this partially protected (40ha) Sensitive Natural Area through a 5-km trail for walkers and cyclists.
You can rent a bike at Cycles La Villersoise, Avenue Jean Moulin, in front of the Paleospace museum. Website in French and English HERE. - SAINT-MARTIN CHURCH & ITS WONDERFUL STAINED GLASS WINDOWS
Place de l’Eglise, 14640 Villers-sur-Mer
The current church replaced in 1874 the former one which had become too small with the influx of tourists.
It’s a typical example of the neo-gothic style of the 19th century in Normandy.
Inside, admire the superb stained glass windows by the Duhamel Marette workshop in Evreux : 51 colored windows dedicated to Saint-Joseph : they are considered in Lower Normandy as an art masterpiece from the end of the 19th century and are classifed as historical monuments. The scenes depicted look so real, it’s amazing. - THE PRESBYTERAL MANOR
24 rue du Général de Gaulle, 14640 Villers-sur-Mer
Dating from 1750 and renovated between 1977 and 1979, this presbytery is a fine example of a Norman half-timbered building. Nowadays, it’s the property of the town of Villers.
The other building (to the west of the presbytery) is an old 19th century sheepfold that was in the Villers marshes and was moved to be rebuilt here piece by piece. - MARKETS
The traditional market : Tuesday and Friday morning all year round in the city center.
The organic market : Sunday morning, in the city center close to the fountain.
