Deauville
My good tip on your way to Deauville from Cabourg or Houlgate
Stop to BENERVILLE-SUR-MER to visit the Park des Enclos Calouste Gulbenkian and Mont Canisy German battery.
BENERVILLE
Bénerville is half-way between Villers sur Mer and Deauville, has 2 beaches (more quiet than the Deauville one) and attracted some celebrities :
Gallimard (a famous French editor) who was the first owner of « Château Gabriel » a neogothic villa dating from 1874.
Then, Yves Saint-Laurent bought the property in 1983, wanting to escape the stifling heat of Marrakech in summer where he lived since 1980 in the Majorelle’s villa with Pierre Bergé.
Calouste Gulbenkian, an Armenian business man (who was also one of the greatest art collectors of the 20th century) created a very peaceful garden, the dream of his life, in the Domaine des Enclos that he acquired in 1937: with a landscape architect, they combined in this 33-hectare park a mix of different gardens styles (French, English and Italian) where it’s very pleasant to walk especially when it’s hot : you will discover trees with rare species, a rose garden, an orchard, forests and clearings… you can also picnic on deckchairs !
MONT CANISY BATTERY
Don’t miss Mont Canisy and its German battery (free access) on the heights of Deauville offering a gorgeous view of the Floral Coast and the Pays d’Auge at 110 meters high.
The site was for centuries a seigneurial domain and became a strategic place for the Germans during WWII where you can see bunkers, casemates and other vestiges.
Today, Mont Canisy is a natural site protected by the Conservatory of Littoral.

With its two-kilometer sandy beach bordered by the well-known « Les Planches », Deauville is a luxury seaside resort also famous for its casino, luxury hotels, horse racing and Yearling sales and the American Film Festival created in 1975 that takes place every year in September.
Deauville has only 4,000 inhabitants but attracts a lot of people : tourists from all over the world and also Parisians who like to come to the seaside resort for weekends as it is only 2 hours from the capital.
Nevertheless, in the middle of the 19th century, Deauville as it is today did not exist. In those times, there was only a little village called « Dosville » located on the heights of the Mont Canisy around the Saint-Laurent church where about 100 people lived from agriculture and breeding.
It was in 1858 that the seaside resort started to be created from scratch by the duke of Morny, a French financier and a politician who wanted to offer the wealthy Parisians an elegant place to entertain not far from Paris. Of course, he thought that he could make a lot of money with this project ! And he was right since many beautiful villas started to be built, a train station appeared in 1865 and also hotels, a racecourse and « hydrotherapy baths ». Deauville was born !

- THE BEACH, LES « PLANCHES » AND THE POMPEIAN BATHS
The beach : walk along the 2-km sandy beach of Deauville and admire the beautiful colors of the sky and the sea at any time of the day : Eugène Boudin was fascinated by the changing lights of that beach and settled his easel very often to paint that magical view.
If you continue to walk further than the end of the Boards, you will arrive to the beach of Bénerville. Many beautiful villas can be admired along the beach.Les Planches/The Boards : In the 19th century, people came to seaside resorts to enjoy sea bathing but also to show up with elegant outfits : ladies could walk on the boardwalks without fear of ruining their beautiful dresses in the sand.
In 1921, the old beach cabins and the boardwalk were replaced by a modern « Sea-bathing Establishment », called the « Pompeian Baths » in the art deco style (inaugurated in 1924) and the famous « Boards » are installed at the same time. The promenade is today 642 meters long (originally 444 meters).
Since the 1990s, names of some actresses and actors who frequented the American Film Festival have been written on the concrete barriers separating each beach cabin. The place not to miss in Deauville and where to take a picture !The Pompeian Baths : dating from 1921, the Pompeian Baths were very modern for their time : built in concrete, admire the beautiful mosaics, the fountains, the cabins dedicated to therapeutic baths and the pools. You can hire a beach cabin for the day, week or month ! Today there are 450 of them (in 1921, 250) : some open directly on the famous « Planches » or on the inner courtyards or on the Boulevard.
- THE CASINO
2 rue Edmond Blanc, 14800 Deauville
The first casino in Deauville was created in 1864, a few meters away from the current one. In 1895 it was demolished, when the Parisians no longer came to Deauville at the fall of the Empire, the resort making too much reference to this fallen regime. It was during this period that the casino of Trouville developed attracting a lot of people.
In 1912, the second casino of Deauville was inaugurated (at the same time as the new one of Trouville) : it looks like the « Petit Trianon of Versailles ». The Hotel Le Normandy was also built to welcome gamblers. Success was immediate and the Hotel Le Royal opened the following year. The casino of Trouville was quickly abandoned by people in favor of that of Deauville.
Today, each casino has found its clientele : more fortunate in Deauville and more « family » in Trouville. - THE TWO LUXURY HOTELS : LE NORMANDY & HOTEL ROYAL
The success of Deauville is extremely linked to Eugène Cornuché (and his business partner François André, founder of the Groupe Barrière), a French entrepreneur, owner of the famous Maxim’s restaurant in Paris, manager of the Trouville casino and founder of the one in Deauville in 1910. He was the one who decided to build the Hotel Le Normandy and then Le Royal.DID YOU KNOW ?
Coco Chanel (not yet known) opened her first fashion boutique in 1913 in Deauville between the hotel Le Normandy and the casino : it was called « Gabrielle Chanel ».
Go to the 11, avenue Lucien Barrière and you will see a plaque signed Karl Lagerfeld in honor to the legendary stylist who started to revolutionize fashion in Deauville offering flexible and casual clothes inspired by men’s wardrobe.– LE NORMANDY (the palace I consider to have the most charm. If you can, have a drink at the bar of the hotel for a small luxury experience !)
38 rue Jean Mermoz, 14800 Deauville
Inaugurated in 1912 and considered at the time as « the most beautiful hotel in the world », this legendary 5-star luxury hotel was built in a traditional regional manor-style, looking like a huge Anglo-Norman cottage. Admire the beautiful pastel green half-timbered facades and stone checkerboards walls.
It was the first palace hotel of Deauville followed the year after by the Hotel Royal.
Le Normandy hotel has always attracted the big names in cinema and is at the center of the American Film Festival every year in September.
The hotel was completely renovated in 2016.
The 271 rooms and suites are all decorated with Toile de Jouy adorning the walls.
There is a gastronomic restaurant, La Belle Epoque (lunch menus at 39 and 49 euros and brunch on Sunday at 90 euros) and a very cozy bar ( in the Louis XVI woodwork style) open every day from 11am to midnight.– HOTEL LE ROYAL
Boulevard Eugène Cornuché, 14800 Deauville.
Inaugurated in 1913 only one year after the opening of hotel Le Normandy given the success of the resort, the hotel Le Royal is a place of cosy luxury with its imposing facade facing the sea, its 219 rooms and 27 suites. The red color dominates giving an impression of a palace of the Old Empire, with its velvet armchairs and sofa, its high ceilings and its fairy chandeliers.
It’s worth crossing the lobby just to take a look or treat yourself with a coffee or a drink at the bar ! - THE HIPPODROME (= THE RACECOURSE) DEAUVILLE-LA TOUQUES
45 avenue Hocquart de Turtot, 14800 Deauville. It was built very close to the city center in 1864 by the duke of Morny who was passionate about horses. In the center, there are 3 polo fields.
Horse races are organized all year round but in August, there is a rich program with 7 prestigious races with the best French and international riders running : an event not to be missed if you are interested by horse races ! All the schedule of races in Deauville HERE. - « LES FRANCISCAINES » CULTURAL CENTER
145b Avenue de la République, 14800 Deauville.
A must-see !An exceptional place dedicated to culture which opened in 2021 with temporary exhibitions, an auditorium (in a former chapel) and a media library located in a building of the 19th century which was a convent, an orphange, a school and a hospital.
– Website HERE.
– Open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:30am-6:30pm.
– Closed on May 1st and December 25th.
– Free access to the cloister, the media library, (the book shop and the restaurant).
– Entrance fee for exhibitions.
Discover a magnificent renovated cultural centre respecting the history of the building with a contemporary touch that makes the place majestic! When I visited it, I was so amazed and impressed that I stayed there for hours, walking and admiring the different spaces so well arranged.
Magic happens as soon as you enter what was the cloister of the convent where visitors are first welcomed. No doubt, you will be captivated by the huge and splendid modern chandelier made of 14,285 polycarbonate tubes ! By the way, is it a nod to the impressionists as it looks like a big elegant cloud in the Norman sky… ? In this vast and bright space of 400m2, you can read newspapers and magazines available for free and trust me : you will remain speechless so it’s beautiful, original and unique !
Don’t hesitate also to go upstairs to « visit » the media library (it’s free) : paintings and photos all related to Deauville and its history are displayed on the walls of the 5 different thematic spaces. Each space refers to a universe (Horses, Deauville, Spectacles, Art of living and Youth) and has its own specific color which is a delight for the eyes : we no longer want to leave but to curl up with a book in the comfortable sofas and armchairs that are here and there !
There are also quite playful information interactive points (in French and in English) that will allow you to learn more about the city’s past and present.
Finally, you can eat at « The Réfectoire », the modern canteen of the Franciscans to enjoy fresh, original and balanced dishes in a relaxed setting as you sit around a large shared table ! There is also a nice terrace for sunny days. More details below in my « restaurant recommendations » / Eat in Deauville. - VILLA STRASSBURGER
1 avenue Strassburger, Deauville.
Listed as a Historical Momunent in 1975.
Villa Strassburger is definitely worth a visit, even only from the outside, if you’re not lucky enough to be there when it’s open to the public (guided tours are organized in French and only a few days a month).
To get the dates of the guided visits, please contact the Tourist Office at : info@indeauville.fr
During the guided tour, you will discover rooms with their period furniture, decoration, paintings of horses … exactly as they were in 1980 when the heirs of Strassburger bequeathed the villa to the city of Deauville.
This is an architectural gem, a great symbol of Deauville at the time of the Belle Epoque.
Before the construction of the villa, there was here « the Coteau Farm », the family property of Gustave Flaubert, the famous French writer, bought in 1837. Flaubert inherited it when his mother died in 1872 but had to sell it 3 years later to pay family debts.
A bit away from the city center, the villa dating from 1907 is a superb half-timbered neo-Norman style manor surrounded by a beautiful park. It was designed by an architect from Caen (Georges Pichereau) for Baron Henri de Rothschild and was built near a racetrack since Rothschild was fond of horse races.
The villa was bought in 1924 by the American billionaire Strassburger and has been the property of the city of Deauville since 1980.
It can be rented for special events (wedding, seminar, conference…). - THE VILLA OF EUGENE BOUDIN
8 rue Olliffe, Deauville (in the town center).
Eugène Boudin was born in Honfleur in 1824 and used to spend his summers in Deauville and Trouville from 1864. He produced in Deauville more than 100 canvases and gouaches. He was inspired by life in the seaside resorts, the markets, the view from the ports, the changing light of the sky affecting the color of the sea… From Deauville beach he had a fascinating view of the coastline (called the « Côte Fleurie ») and he often installed his easel on the pier to capture the view, always with the same framing but never having the same lights. In 1884, he had a villa built in Deauville called « Les Ajoncs » located at 8 rue Olliffe where he died in 1898 : feeling the end, he was in Paris and asked to die facing the sea in his beloved Normandy. Today, the villa is called « La Breloque » and you can see it from the street. There is a plaque on the facade.
In 2010, a plaque representing his painting « La plage de Deauville » was put on the dike of Port Deauville.
FYI, you can admire some paintings of Eugène boudin :
– In Honfleur, at the Eugène Boudin Museum.
– In Le Havre, at the MUMA (Museum of Modern Art André Malraux).
– In Caen, at the Fine Arts Museum. - MARKETS

Admire on the main facade, the 9 enamelled lava paintings made by Jules Jollivet in 1866.And inside, the very beautiful stained glass windows whose exceptional colours are revealed when the sunlight passes through them.

THE BELGIAN BRIDGE AND THE SMALL FERRY BOAT LINKING DEAUVILLE TO TROUVILLE
Want to go to Trouville from Deauville (and vice versa) easily ? No need to move your car !
- Option 1 – On foot : take the Pont des Belges (the Belgians’ Bridge) : bridge named like this to pay tribute to the Belgian soldiers of the Piron Brigade who liberated Deauville on August 22, 1944 and Trouville 2 days later. Two of them, Marcel Fournier and Simon Rouche were killed there when the Germans bombed the town and destroyed the bridge right after the liberation of Deauville. There is a commemorative plaque with their names at the entrance of the bridge and a memorial in the middle was erected in tribute to the Belgian and Luxembourg soldiers of the Piron Brigade.
- Option 2 – By boat : at high tide only, take the small ferry boat (=bac) called « Le Trait d’Union » and cross the Touques river in 7 minutes.
Crossing every 5 minutes / around 1,50 euros per passenger.
At low tide, a footbridge is installed to cross the river.
Where can you take this small ferry boat of 25 passengers ?
Deauville to Trouville : Bac de Deauville, Esplanade du Quai des Yachts, 14800 Deauville.
Trouville to Deauville : Quai Albert 1er, 14360 Trouville.
Les Franciscaines Cultural Center : a must-see in Deauville !
A beautiful shop that I like very much... "LA MAISON"
Enter the decoration and furniture store called La Maison, 11 rue Edmond Blanc, next to the casino :
located in an authentic family villa in a greenery setting, the place is very charming and worth a visit. In the garden, 2 greenhouses are used to exhibit some garden furniture, tableware…
Don't miss the famous French store "Le Printemps"
Located close to the back of the hotel Le Normandy.
104 rue Eugène Colas, Deauville.
After 6 months of works, « Le Printemps » in Deauville reopened in May 2023. The facade had alreday been restored 4 years ago.
This typical Norman half-timbered manor consisting of 11 rooms on 2 levels is worth a visit for its unique atmosphere of luxury.
The new setting is very successful with its light colors, graphic carpets, contemporary design elements…
It was in 1912 that the Printemps group inaugurated its first store outside Paris by settling in Deauville since many Parisians came on holiday to the seaside resort.
