MUST-SEE/DO IN CABOURG !!
– The beach, the Promenade Marcel Proust and Cape Cabourg
– The Belle Epoque villas
– The Grand Hotel
– The Casino
– The Markets
With its 4 kilometers of fine sand along the Promenade Marcel Proust, Cabourg beach is the ideal place to admire the seaside Belle Époque villas and eclectic architecture but also the beautiful panorama on the Côte Fleurie.
Did you know that its nickname is the Beach of the romantics ? By the way, each year the Cabourg Romantic Film Festival takes places for five days, usually at mid-June.
From the Promenade Marcel Proust (a 3,6-km pedestrian walkway along the seafront), look at the imposing facade of the Grand Hôtel and go into the entrance hall (you’re allowed to) to discover a world of charm and glamor.
And why not have a drink in the piano lounge to enjoy this beautiful setting for a while ? If you are lucky, you will hear the pianist play some notes while you are there…
Don’t miss the Casino and its gardens next to the Grand Hotel and its brasserie facing the sea.
The Grand Hotel of Cabourg and the Casino were listed as Historic Monuments in 2014.
I advise you to walk to the beach of Cape Cabourg which is the easternmost beach of the seaside resort (when you are on the Promenade Marcel Proust facing the sea, go right) and the closest to the mouth of the Dives river and Houlgate : it’s a wild beach, bordered by dunes. A very enjoyable walk not to miss if you like wild sites.
You can find some interesting information on the Belle Epoque villas and architecture in Cabourg on the website of the city (available in French and English) HERE.
VISIT
- A WALKING TOUR OF CABOURG VILLAS is offered by the Office of Tourism : visit by yourself an open-air museum !
Go to the Office of Tourism : you will be given a free map (in French or English) to discover on your own 30 beautiful villas with atypical architecture through a circuit of 3,2 km / 1hr30 (only the French brochure gives some details about each villa).
You end the tour at the Museum-Villa du Temps Retrouvé.
This tour is also available on the Cirkwi App.
Another similar tour is available in Hougalte where you will discover 41 villas (4,6 km/2hrs).These Belle-Epoque villas are typical of the 20th century : the Parisian bourgeois and aristocrats wanted to have here the most beautiful and the most imposing second homes ! So there is a mix of styles, the owners wanting to create unique façades of their villa.
- VISIT THE ONLY MUSEUM OF CABOURG :
« LA VILLA DU TEMPS RETROUVE » (VILLA OF TIME RECOVERED)
An innovative museum using modern technology to discover and better understand the « Belle Epoque ».
Very interesting, surprising, instructive and beautiful !
Here you will explore the world of the Belle Époque with Marcel Proust as your guide (his statue stands at the entrance of the museum) and discover prestigious collections of paintings but also furniture, costumes… through a journey into the daily life of this fascinating period which refers to the « golden age » of Cabourg and the Côte Fleurie.
The Villa also hosts, each year, a temporary exhibition on a more popular theme related to the Belle Époque.
