THE D-DAY LANDING BEACHES

The American cemetery, Omaha Beach, Normandy
American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, Omaha Beach

THE 5 LANDING SECTORS AND KEY FACTS ABOUT D-DAY

The landing area was divided into five sectors by the Allies :

Two American sectors : Utah Beach (the westernmost sector) and Omaha Beach.
Two British sectors : Gold Beach and Sword Beach (the easternmost sector)
One Canadian sector : Juno Beach.

Their code names were derived from randomly selected American states for Omaha and Utah ; for the Anglo-Canadian sectors, they corresponded to the abbreviations of certain fish names : Goldfish, Swordfish, Jellyfish (« Jelly » having become « Juno » in honor of an officer’s wife).

Chronology of the landing on June 6th, 1944, a date determined by General Eisenhower, Commander-in-Chief of the Allied forces :

PHASE 1The airborne landing : from midnight, the pathfinders were parachuted onto Utah Beach the westernmost beach and Sword Beach the easternmost beach to designate the drop zones for the airborne troops.
Subsequently, Allied planes deployed 23,400 paratroopers while gliders silently touched down in the countryside.
Their mission : to capture bridges and roadways to impede German forces from reaching the beaches where the main Allied landings were scheduled to take place shortly thereafter.

PHASE 2 Naval and aerial bombardments commenced at 5:50 am and 6 am respectively, aiming to eliminate German strategic positions such as coastal artillery batteries and radar stations. The objective was to clear the way for the soldiers’ landing on the beaches. Bombardments ceased 5 minutes before H-hour.

PHASE 3 The sea landings started at 6:30 am on Utah and Omaha beaches involving 132,000 soldiers on June 6th across all five beaches and 225 Rangers at Pointe du Hoc. Their mission was to push the Germans as far inland as possible and unload military supplies to sustain the battle.

OPERATION OVERLORD, the code name for the Battle of Normandy was initiated with the objective of enabling the Allies to establish a new front in Western Europe.
OPERATION  NEPTUNE,
the initial phase of Operation Overlord involved the Allied landing and the establishment of beachheads in Normandy.
However, the operation faced numerous challenges, resulting in significant casualties.

My advice to visit the D-Day beaches

The D-Day landing beaches span 55 miles/80 kilometers from Utah Beach to Sword Beach. Therefore, it’s not feasible to visit all sectors in just one or even two days.
Regardless, having a vehicle is essential for touring the landing beaches on your own, as public transportation options are limited.

If you’re not a big history buff  or if you’re short on time, consider visiting two adjacent sectors in a single day. For example, you could explore Utah and Omaha or Omaha and Gold Beach.
However, if you’re deeply passionate about WWII and the events of D-Day and if you seek a comprehensive understanding of the Normandy campaign, I highly recommend dedicating a full day  (or more if you want to visit several museums) to each sector.

FOR A THOROUGH EXPLORATION OF THE LANDING SITES, I SUGGEST : at least 4 days to visit the 5 sectors :

– A full day to explore the Utah Beach sector (American sector).
– Another full day to visit the Omaha Beach sector (American sector) along with the Longues-sur-Mer German battery, and Arromanches (on Gold Beach, British sector).

Longues and Arromanches are situated within the British sector of Gold Beach. They are highly recommended visits even if you’re primarily interested in the American sites. Additionally, they are adjacent to Omaha Beach and very close to Bayeux (a mere 10-minute drive away).

– A full day on the Sword Beach sector (British sector). Alternatively, you can combine Sword Beach with Gold Beach (also in the British sector) for a one-day visit.
– Another full day to the Canadian sector, Juno Beach.

HOW TO VISIT THE D-DAY BEACHES ?

If you’re unsure whether to explore the Beaches with or without a tour guide, check out my recommendations !

WITHOUT A TOUR GUIDE

OPTION 1 : The cheapest one : explore the landing beaches independently, without a guide, using your own vehicle or a rental car. With GPS, the main sites are easily accessible and visitor parkings are available throughout (though it may be challenging during peak seasons). While some country roads are narrow, navigating them is quite manageable.

OPTION 2 : Opt for a chauffeured vehicle. With this choice you can relax without concerns about navigation or parking. Private drivers are familiar with the area and can even recommend lesser-known sites. However, they don’t offer guided services. This option is moderately priced and suitable for those without a vehicle or who prefer not to drive.

MY POINT OF VIEW IF YOU DON’T OPT FOR A GUIDE
It’s important to recognize that without a guide, you’ll miss out on a wealth of information and emotion, especially at sites as significant as the landing beaches. Trust me, even if you’re not initially passionate about the subject, you’ll be captivated by the stories shared by a knowledgeable guide and the emotional narratives of the soldiers. While this option does come with a cost, the experience is truly invaluable. Luckily, there are options available for every budget.
Therefore, I highly recommend considering option 3 or 4, depending on your financial plan.

WITH A TOUR GUIDE

OPTION 3 : Book a full-day group tour.
An excellent choice if you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to delve into the essentials of the Normandy landing with a knowledgeable tour guide.
These tours typically accommodate small groups in a mini-van (up to 7 people) or a mini-bus (up to 20 people). You’ll visit key sites and gain a comprehensive overview of the events of D-Day. It’s the most economical option for a guided tour and offers great value for your money.

OPTION 4 : Hire a private guide.
The best option but also the most costly.

While this option may be pricier, the guide will tailor the tour to your specific interests and knowledge level and you’ll have their undivided attention. This allows for in-depth discussions and the opportunity to ask as many questions as you like on the topic. It’s an ideal choice for avid history enthusiasts but it’s suitable for anyone looking for a personalized experience.

WHERE TO STAY ON THE D-DAY BEACHES ?

You’re pondering the best accommodation for visiting the landing sites?
It actually depends on the sector(s) you plan to visit, the duration of your stay and whether you opt for a guided tour or not.

OPTION 1 : IF YOU WANT TO BOOK A GUIDED TOUR

I recommend staying in Bayeux as many tour companies operate from there offering visits to all the sectors (American, British, and Canadian).
You can choose between full-day or half-day tours based on your schedule, interests and budget but I highly recommend full-day tours.

OPTION 2 : If you're exploring the sites without a guide and with your own vehicle

1- TO VISIT UTAH & OMAHA (American sectors) AND GOLD BEACH (British sector)

Bayeux (or its surroundings) is the best place to stay since it’s at the doors of these sectors.
– For accommodation in Bayeux, click HERE .

However, I also have a few options on Utah/Omaha and Gold Beach :
– For accommodation on the American sector, click HERE .
– For accommodation on Gold Beach, click HERE .

2- TO VISIT SWORD BEACH (British sector)

The easternmost landing sector is 35 minutes by car from Bayeux. So you can stay in this area especially if you decide to continue your journey to the Floral Coast between Cabourg and Honfleur and spend a few days exploring this beautiful coast with its mythical seaside resorts such as Deauville or Trouville… But visiting Sword Beach from Bayeux is quite doable if you decide to stay in Bayeux.
– For accommodations on/close to Sword Beach, click HERE .

3- TO VISIT JUNO BEACH (Canadian sector)
You can stay in Bayeux, the Juno Beach Center in Courseulles-sur-Mer is 25 minutes’ drive but I also have some good recommendations in this sector.

For accommodation on /near the Juno Beach sector, click HERE .
