Castles to visit in the surroundings of Bayeux
Château de Balleroy
A castle that inspired that of Versailles and where you can appreciate one of the first suspended staircases in France.
Balleroy castle is a private property opened to visitors. You can visit the interior of the chateau, the hot air balloon museum, the park and the garden and the dovecote with its 1,700 « boulins » (stone nests).
The chateau was built in 1631 by the architect François Mansart (1598-1666) at the request of Jean II de Choisy, Receiver General for Finance in Caen. The creation of the urban plan with the castle and the village inspired other chateaux such as that of Versailles. The château of Balleroy is very innovative in the architecture that appeared at this time.
The château was owned for 50 years by the Forbes family (who acquired it in 1970) : it was then fully restored and refurnished.
Roy Eddleman, a family friend who used to come here often fell in love with the architecture of the castle, which he bought in 2020. Mr Eddleman died in June 2022 but the castle will not be sold and work and projects will continue.

It is open to the public for guided tours (in French and English) only on a short period during the high season, from June to September : you will access several rooms of the castle, the radio and BBC museum (during the D-Day landing in 1944, the BBC studio had been set up by war reporters in the Square Tower of the castle) and an exhibition on the works of Roland Lefranc, Norman painter and lithographer of the 20th century.

It was originally in the 13th century a defensive and fortified castle that was transformed into a rich residence in the 16th century by an architect of Caen. This castle has a sculpted aspect like lace that can remind the castles of the Loire Valley.
